Growing up in the “cow town” of Vacaville, California, Lyndsey Elm was a standout student athlete. She played guard for the Vacaville Christian girls basketball team, and led the Falcons to a perfect 12-0 record in league play and 21-7 record overall during her 2010 senior year.

When she wasn’t working on her jump shot or hitting the books, Elm sang for her own pleasure. It wasn’t until she was called upon to sing the national anthem before a game that she realized her vocal talent could lead to something more than a past time.

After acquiring a degree in Kinesiology from Cal-Poly, San Luis Obispo in 2014, Elm started singing at various Vacaville coffee houses. This year, sufficiently emboldened, she decided to try her luck on NBC’s hit competition The Voice.

Elm’s audition — in which she put her own spin on Meghan Trainor’s “Lips Are Movin” — prompted all four judges to turn their chairs — first Gwen Stefani, then Adam Levine, Pharrell Williams, and Blake Shelton.

Elm eventually settled on fellow California girl Stefani as her coach, but not before Levine and Shelton touted their basketball credentials in trying to tempt her to their respective teams.

Levine and Shelton’s smack talk during Elm’s audition led to a basketball game on the back lot that looked more like a game of H-O-R-S-E than one-on-one.
